Persian is a language, which is spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the Persian Gulf countries, belonging to the Indo-European languages. It belongs to the Iranian group of Indo-Iranian languages, which are a branch of Indo-European language family. It derives from a language which is spoken by the ancient Persian people. In the courts of India, use of Persian as the official language was later banned by the British in the 18th century.

Persian has undergone many changes until it takes its present form. It is possible to categorize this language as Old, Middle, Classical and Contemporary Persian.

Persian and its dialects are official languages in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. This language is the native language of about a hundred million people. It is estimated that Persian is spoken by many people in other countries, especially in India and Pakistan.

Persian has been a prestigious cultural language in Central Asia, South Asia and the Middle East for centuries and affected the languages of neighboring countries, especially Turkic languages in Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Anatolia. However, it has less effect on Arabic and the languages of Mesopotamia.

With a strong poetic and melodic influence, Persian is the second cultural language of the Islamic World. Islamic classics, especially those about Sufism, were written in this language. Five hundred years before British colonialism, Persian was commonly used as a second language in and around India. Considered to be the language of culture and literature in South Asia, Persian became the official language during Mongol Empire. In the region, the historical influence of Persian can be understood from its influence on Hindustani, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Bengali, and Telugu languages. Also, the fact that people in this region still loves Iranian literature is one of the proofs of its influence.

Especially Urdu is a combination of Persian, Arabic, Turkish, and the regional languages of South Asia. This language was used widely in the Muslim regions of India and the Mongol Empire.
