As one of the East Slavic languages, Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine. It has many common words with related Slavic languages such as Russian, Polish, and Slovak. Ukrainian is one of the languages that survived despite the bans on the language during periods of Tsarist Russia and the USSR. The deep-rooted folk literature culture of Ukrainian enabled its speakers to preserve the language and brought it to the present day. Ukrainian is written with the Ukrainian Alphabet, one of the national variations of the Cyrillic alphabet.
