Vietnamese

Vietnamese is a branch of the Viet-Muong in the Vietic languages subgroup of the Austroasiatic languages. It is the national and official language of the Republic of Vietnam. It is the mother tongue of almost the entire population living in Vietnam and about three million people as minorities overseas. Vietnamese, whose current writing system is an adaptation of the Latin alphabet, has used the Chinese writing system until recently, and therefore has been highly influenced by this language. Therefore, it has common vocabulary with Chinese.
